About Kerry

Kerry Bone is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading experts in herbal medicine. Over the past four decades, he has made significant contributions to the field as a clinician, educator, scientist and author. His career has been guided by a commitment to scientific rigor and a deep respect for the traditional wisdom of herbal medicine.

Kerry began his academic journey with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, graduating with honours and receiving the Masson Prize, awarded to Australia’s top honours-year chemistry student. This strong foundation in chemistry has shaped his approach to herbal medicine, allowing him to combine the best of science with the tradition of herbal therapy. After completing his studies at The School of Herbal Medicine in England under the mentorship of Master Herbalist Hein Zeylstra, Kerry returned to Australia to begin his clinical practice. However, he quickly became dissatisfied with the quality of herbal products available at the time.

Determined to raise the standard of herbal medicine, Kerry merged his expertise in chemistry and herbal medicine to pioneer innovative manufacturing techniques. These efforts led to the co-founding of MediHerb in 1986, a company that has since become a global leader in the development and production of high-quality herbal products.

Throughout his career, Kerry has authored or co-authored seven leading textbooks on herbal medicine, which are widely used in colleges and universities worldwide and he has twice won the prestigious James A Duke Excellence in Botanical Literature award from the American Botanical Council. His research contributions are extensive, with over 59,000 reads and 3,300 citations on ResearchGate, placing him in the 96th percentile for research interest. Kerry has served on the editorial Board of the leading research journal, Phytomedicine, since 2016. These achievements highlight his dedication to bridging the gap between traditional herbal knowledge and scientific understanding.

Kerry’s work has been recognised with numerous awards, including the prestigious Lady Cilento Award in 2015 for lifelong contributions to herbal therapy and the 2022 award for outstanding contributions to Integrative Medicine by the National Institute of Integrative Medicine in Australia.

In addition to his academic and professional achievements, Kerry has served on several advisory committees, including:

  • Member of the Traditional Medicines Evaluation Committee (1990–1997), advising the Australian Government’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) on herbal medicine.

  • Technical Adviser to the National Herbalists Association of Australia (1995–2000, 2003).

  • Member of the American Herbal Pharmacopeia project (1998 to present).

  • Member of the American Botanical Council Advisory Board (2011 to present).

  • Through these roles, Kerry has plays an integral part in developing policies and standards that ensure the safe and effective use of herbal medicines.

At the core of Kerry’s work is a desire to educate and empower others. Whether teaching, writing, or practicing, his goal is to inspire practitioners and individuals to harness the potential of herbal medicine in a thoughtful and evidence-based manner.

Kerry’s contributions continue to shape the future of herbal medicine, and he remains dedicated to sharing his knowledge and insights with a global audience.
